Joel Edgerton was born in Melbourne, Australia. He studied drama at the University of Western Sydney, then immediately landed a guest appearance on the Aussie series Police Rescue in 1995, followed by a small role in the Columbia Tristar motion picture Race the Sun (1996), starring Halle Berry.

More TV and film work followed and in 2002, Joel won an Australian Film Institute Award as Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Television Drama for The Secret Life of Us (2001). He earned international attention when he was chosen to play Uncle Owen in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002), reprising the role in the final Star Wars installment as well.

He went on to play roles in Ned Kelly (2003) opposite Heath Ledger (for which Edgerton received a Best Supporting Actor nomination from the Film Critics Circle of Australia), and King Arthur (2004) with Clive Owen. In Kinky Boots (2006), he played the starring role as a man who inherits a failing shoe business. He joined an all-star cast, including Ben Affleck and Jeremy Piven in the crime drama Smokin' Aces (2006) and also provided the voice of Metal Beak in the animated feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010).

Joel collaborated with his brother, director Nash Edgerton, for the 2008 Australian thriller The Square—Joel co-wrote the screenplay, executive produced and starred in the film. He has since gone on to star in several notable films, such as 2011's Warrior alongside Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte, The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012) opposite Jennifer Garner, the political thriller Zero Dark Thirty (2013) and the big-screen adaptation of the classic novel The Great Gatsby (2013).

The talented actor has kept quite busy in recent years, starring in Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), The Gift (2015), Black Mass (2015), Jane Got a Gun (2016) and Midnight Special (2016). For his work in the feature film Loving (2016), Joel received a Golden Globe nomination. More recently, he starred opposite Jennifer Lawrence in the spy thriller Red Sparrow (2018) and with Charlize Theron and David Oyelowo in the comedy Gringo (2018).
