Born in England, Ben Whishaw graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in Spring 2003.

However, his acting experience began much earlier, as a member of the Bancroft Players Youth Theatre, followed by supporting roles in the films The Trench and Mauvaise Passé (both 1999), the title role in the 2001 feature My Brother Tom (for which he won a British Independent Film Award as Most Promising Newcomer) and a role as Sully in the mini-series Other People's Children (2000).

Following graduation he played Spud in Enduring Love (2004) opposite Daniel Craig; Keith Richards in the biopic Stoned (2005) and a murderer in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2007). On TV he played a regular role as Pingu in the TV comedy series Nathan Barley.

Ben has appeared on stage in London's West End at the National Theatre in His Dark Materials and The Seagull, as well as garnering rave reviews in the title role of Trevor Nunn's version of Hamlet at the Old Vic.

Back on the big screen he starred in the musical drama I'm Not There (2007) alongside Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. His career has continued to skyrocket. Other film credits include the star-packed sci-fi drama Cloud Atlas (2012) as well as playing Q alongside Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem in the mega blockbuster Skyfall (2012), which was the 23rd installment in the iconic James Bond film franchise. He reprised his role in the 24th installment of the Bond franchise in Spectre (2015) and also provided the voice of the beloved title bear in the film Paddington(2014).

He played a supporting role in the Golden Globe-nominated motion picture The Danish Girl (2015) alongside Eddie Redmayne, played famed novelist Herman Melville in In the Heart of the Sea (2015) and a supporting role in A Hologram for the King (2016), opposite Tom Hanks. In addition to returning to voice the title role in the film Paddington 2(2018), he played a grown up Michael Banks in the Disney movie Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

In 2020, he starred in The Personal History of David Copperfield and will be seen in the next Bond film, No Time to Die (2020).
