Eddie Redmayne was born and raised in London. He was educated at Eton College and then studied Art History at Trinity College in Cambridge. However, he began taking drama lessons at a young age and made his first appearance as a workhouse boy in Sam Mendes' production of the musical Oliver! in London's West End. At 16, he made his television debut with a guest appearance on the family series Animal Ark, but then took time off to complete his education.

After making a guest appearance on the British series Doctors and playing a role in the mini-series Elizabeth I, which was broadcast on Channel 4 in Britain and HBO in the States, Eddie made his feature film debut in 2006 in Robert De Niro's thriller The Good Shepherd starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie. In 2007, Eddie had a supporting role in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, costarring Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen. He also appeared with Toni Collette in the crime thriller Like Minds, The Other Boleyn Girl with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, Savage Grace with Julianne Moore and The Yellow Handkerchief alongside Kristen Stewart.

Onstage, Eddie won the 2004 London Evening Standard Award and the 2005 London Critics Circle Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer for his West End performance in Edward Albee's drama The Goat or Who is Sylvia?, in which he played a troubled teen opposite Jonathan Pryce. Eddie won an Laurence Olivier Award as Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding performance in the critically acclaimed theatrical production Red, which then transferred to the Golden Theatre on Broadway, where he won a 2010 Tony Award for Actor in a Featured Role.

He's appeared in two mini-series: the Golden Globe nominated The Pillars of the Earth for Channel 4 and Starz in the States; and in the leading role of Angel Clare alongside Gemma Arterton in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Tess of the D’Urbervilles.

In My Week With Marilyn (2011), Eddie starred alongside Michelle Williams as a film crew member who spends a week with Marilyn Monroe, and he was also d cast in Les Misérables in the coveted role of Marius.

He won a Golden Globe award for his amazing portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the 2014 movie The Theory of Everything. He went on to win a Best Actor Academy Award for his work in the film.

Since then, he's received critical acclaim for his role as a transgender woman in The Danish Girl(2015), including an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination. He played Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them(2016), based on J.K. Rowling's book. He lent his voice to the animated film Early Man (2017) before returning to reprise his role in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018). Most recently, he played scientist James Glaisher in The Aeronauts (2019), alongside Felicity Jones.

Eddie, who makes his home in London, married Hannah Bagshawe on December 15, 2014. They are parents to daughter Iris Mary Redmayne and son Luke Richard Bagshawe.
