The only negative thing I would say about The Last Samurai is that the timing of the release couldn`t have been worse. To be up against Lord of the Rings at the Oscars is a real shame, as I feel that Cruise`s film could only be overshadowed by a film (Trilogy) as huge as that. The Last Samurai is a film with strengths in so many areas (too many to go into here). I am just so pleased that at last, Hollywood has seen fit to look at Japanese cultural history (even if it is at the end of an era) and be able to produce a piece of work that I for one regard as "fine", and I mean that in the context of "fine art" rather than mediocre. I hope this wi

Me and my husband can honestly say that The Last Samurai was the BEST movie we have ever seen. We were so overwhelmed by various emotions that we had to stay in the theatre for a few minutes after the movie to return to reality. ****** a six star movie!!!

I do not know what Westerners say; but, for Japanese, very authentic for the first time of the Hollywood history.

One of the few modern films that I would (and will) go to see for a second time. I know a little of the period, and I was impressed by the accuracy and that this in no way hampered the excitement. Really enjoyed it. Colin

The Last Samurai was the best film I`ve ever seen in my entire life - outstanding casting and acting. Ken Watanabe made the movie what it is. I`ve watched it 5 times already and can hardly wait to purchase the DVD.

I`ve seen the Last Samurai 3 times and intend to see it at least one more time before it leaves the movie houses. The Last Samurai tells a compelling story of two men and the development of a profound spiritually based friendship. It is a tale of two cultures and many sub-stories of love, friendship, greed, amition, power, codes of honour and, above all, it is the story, told in a microcosmic way, of the struggle of life for all human beings. I`ve had taken a number of friends and each of us (and for me each time I`ve seen this movie) they were all deeply touched: emotionally, psychically, spiritually. I was impressed by the cultural integrit

Superb, simply magnificent, excellent storytelling, inspiring and uplifting....Such grandeur, emotionally enveloping...Outstanding cast and crew....Reminds me of Edward Zwick`s other fine film, "Glory" which should have won "Best Picture" for 1989 and Mel Gibson`s "Braveheart"....Purely enjoyable cinematic scope and quality....Congratulations to all the nominees!.....Job well done....A film to be seen and enjoyed by generations to come....

Characterization was this film`s strongest point--the many verbal parries and silent communications between these very real characters made me feel awe, sadness, smirking amusement, loss, and heartbreak. All by itself, that would be a terrific acomplishment and my review would be written and done with. But I really didn`t know anything about this "Ken Watanabe" guy, did I? Not that he`s actually rather easy-going...and not that in real life he looks more like a huggable chipmunk than a slashing Samurai! To be sure, this is silly, but I actually got so obsessed by this that I was downloading pictures of Ken as Katsumoto to my desktop jus

I think ken watanabe is so hot I would marry him in second or any day he has a nice body

What a joy it was to watch this film. Buy far the Movie of the year!! The reason it doesn`t get the respect it should from the Academy awards is because of it`s negative portrayal of the American government. And we all know how patriotic any American awards organizaation is.

Incredible. Perfectly paced and beautifully acted, easily the best I have seen in a long time.

every thing magnificent from beginning to end.

This movie has breathtaking scenery and the supporting cast was great. It almost made up for Tom Cruise taking himself way too seriously throughout the entire film...almost.

Reminds me of Shogun, a strong production.

I was surprised as to how much I enjoyed watching this movie. I went in thinking it would be so-so, but it was better than I had anticipated. Needless to say I felt that my money was well spend.

Excellent movie - great performances of all actors, great work of a director... and amazing Ken Watanabe. He creates the spirit of the movie, makes Samurai`s values authentic. Deserves for Oscar.

User review rating: 0 February 12, 2004

Great scenery, but the U.S. twist to the movie ruined it (this is becoming a bad trend in movies). Tom Cruise was outclassed by the Japanese actors. Should have stuck to the original all-Japanese historical rendition of what took place. The battle scenes are very good!

It´s about something we have lost: honor and a very honest way of life

User review rating: 0 February 11, 2004

An excellent movie-can`t understand why all the negative reviews..... What a treat-for all the senses -beautiful scenery, fantastic acting, and thought provoking scenes and conversations. Tom Cruise is a star and probably always will be but I must mention Ken Watanabe who was outstanding-so much heart and soul in his role- I was moved by his amazing performance. Of course all the other actors were fabulous- I have not often seen actors portray so much emotion without saying a word! While this movie did not receive an Oscar nomination, the fans give it an A+++++ All the best to Ken- sincerely hopes he takes home the award- none of the other

The Last Samurai is one of those few movies that actually delivers what it says it will- an epic. Tom Cruise played a good troubled soldier, but the Japanese cast stole the show- the best performance coming from Ken Watanabe. The accolades are all well deserved.

Incredibly moving experience. Ken Watanabe`s performance made this movie.

I`ve never seen an action movie specially in barbaric war scenes filled with emotional spices which moved me most. I visited Japan before and agree in most of the virtues shown in the movie.

User review rating: 0 February 09, 2004

This is the best movie I have ever seen in my life. Manages to combine the history of several Japanese samurai characters and the legend and character of Saigo Katsumoto to portray how the Japanese people of the time viewed Saigo as a hero. The best part is that even though it is an action film, it is ALL about the characters. It`s witty, sad, funny, romantic, exciting, and just about every positive description you can imagine. Tom performs well, but Ken Watanabe ("Katsumoto") steals the show. This OUTSTANDING actor manages to send chills up and down your spine with just a look as he portrays the fierce samurai leader...then you grow to lo

awesome movie. Tom cruise is great!

A fantastic epic film. More films should aspire to be like this. This film would win many awards in a year not dominated by Lord of the Rings

When I walked into the movie with my brother, I thought it was going to be one of those guy movies. But like they say " never judge a book by it`s cover," the same goes for movies too huh!! I loved it, it was the best movie I`ve seen in a long time! I`d have to say it`s my favorite and would reccomend it to anyone that loves action with a little softness to it!!

Thoroughly entertaining! A wonderful piece of movie making. The only reason you will want to look at your watch in the theatre is the hope that the ending is not near. The music score is moving, and the battle scenes leaving you wondering how they ever filmed them. The final battle scene is very moving, and the movie will have you leaving the theatre with a plethara of emotions. In the reviews I have read on this site, no one has mentioned the amount of humour that exists in the movie, and although I am not a Cruise fan, he does a wonderful job. However, his role is overshadowed by the powerful performance of Ken Wanatabe in the supporting ro

only the first hour i enjoyed, then it went all the way down hill, what a hollywood ending, this was soooo bad.

User review rating: 0 February 01, 2004

the worst movie i have seen Tom Cruise in so far;other than the first half which was good it was ruined by corny battle scenes, gladiator style slow motion action, musical score all rip offs. I could not muster one emotion throughout the whole disaster.
