Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hagerty studied acting as a child. When she came to New York, she continued her studies at Juilliard drama school and became involved with The Production Company, an off-off Broadway company that was founded by her brother Michael and director Norman Rene. Soon after performing in one of her brother's plays, she was asked to audition for the comedy film Airplane! (1980) and won the role of ditzy stewardess Elaine Dickinson.
