A one-time commercial director who moved into documentary making, Harold Becker is known for bringing a gritty realism and earthy humanity to his work. His 1972 feature film debut, The Ragman's Daughter, was overlooked by audiences, but not by critics. Shot in England, it received scant release in North America.
