New Zealand-born director Niccol is a self-described nomad who found his way into film in London, where he became an acclaimed writer and director of commercials. After working in the medium for ten years, he decided to take on the feature film industry.

Moving to Los Angeles, he found a studio to produce his screenplay, the sci-fi thriller Gattaca (1997). With the green light, Niccol took the helm and directed his first feature length film. The film was a success and Niccol continued to shine with his pen, scribing the even more successful The Truman Show (1998), which he also produced. This film received praise from critics, favorable box office numbers and garnered Niccol awards and nominations from across the board including the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTA.

Niccol returned to the directors chair in the 21st century filming his screenplay Simone (2002) starring Al Pacino.

He is married to Canadian actress Rachel Roberts. They have two children.
