Abby Ryder Fortson was born in Burbank, California. She grew up in a family deeply connected to the entertainment industry, with an actress mother and a writer/director/actor father. Surrounded by sets and auditions from an early age, she began acting as a child, initially booking small roles in commercials.

She quickly transitioned into television guest appearances, showing strong comedic timing and emotional range in series such as The Mindy Project and Transparent.

Abby's feature film debut came with Playing It Cool (2014), but her breakout role followed soon after when she was cast as Cassie Lang in Marvel’s Ant-Man (2015) and its sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).

She continued building a steady film career with roles in Forever My Girl (2018) and A Dog's Journey (2019). In 2023, she gained significant critical attention and several awards for her lead performance in the adaptation of Judy Blume's beloved book Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, playing the title role of Margaret.

In 2019 Abby was named one of The Hollywood Reporter's "Top 30 Stars Under the Age of 18" and a few years later she was named CinemaCon's Rising Star of 2022.

In 2026, it was announced that she'll star as Velma Dinkley in Netflix’s upcoming series Scooby-Doo: Origins.
