Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner denied having a romance for 40 years. Now, Douglas says they were keeping a secret. His new memoir, One Helluva Ride, released October 6, revisits their relationship, an affair with Jeanne Tripplehorn and an argument with Julia Roberts that he still regrets.

According to Fox News, Douglas says he became involved with Turner while filming Romancing the Stone in 1984. He describes himself as separated from his first wife but still legally married, and says they hid the relationship to protect his family. Their romance ended after his wife visited the set and spoke with Turner about the marriage. Douglas then returned to his wife and son.

Douglas also reveals a relationship with Tripplehorn during production of Basic Instinct in 1992. PEOPLE writes that Tripplehorn initially hesitated because he was married, but he assured her that he and his wife had formally separated. They remained involved through filming before going their separate ways. Douglas told the magazine he contacted Tripplehorn for permission to include their relationship in the book. Turner, meanwhile, offered a brief response to the attention: “Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael, and I look forward to enjoying the book.”

The memoir also recalls a falling-out with Roberts at a Golden Globes party. In USA Today’s account of the passage, Douglas says he became angry after seeing Roberts with her arm around his teenage son. He acknowledges that he was drunk and may have misread the interaction. After shouting at Roberts and insulting her, he sent roses and apologized in person. They were able to finish Flatliners, which Douglas was producing, but he says they did not remain close.

Both romances took place before Douglas married Catherine Zeta-Jones. Fox News notes that his first divorce was finalized in 2000, and he married Zeta-Jones that November. They share two children, Dylan and Carys. ~ Chidera Arimah
