When Andrew Garfield was promoting The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, he spoke with Entertainment Weekly, revealing he'd discussed having a male MJ as Spider-Man's love interest with producer Matt Tolmach.
He explained, “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ… I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! … So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
He also suggested to director Marc Webb that they have a Black actor play MJ, enthusing, "I've been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better—we'd have interracial bisexuality!"
Recently, while promoting the film The Uprising, which opens in theaters September 11, 2026, Andrew was reminded by EW of his earlier statements about a gay Peter Parker.
"I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit," Garfield said. "That’s the point of why it’s such a kind of universally beloved character, one of the greatly beloved characters in the history of fiction is because you don’t see skin color, you don’t see gender, you don’t see sexuality. Anyone can project themselves into that suit.”
Marvel is reportedly less enthusiastic about the idea. They shared a list of "character integrity obligations" with Sony, stating that Marvel will not interfere in the creative side of the films as long as Sony follows a set list of guidelines. This list says Peter Parker must be "Caucasian and heterosexual." Spider-Man also must not torture, smoke or abuse alcohol — unless he's in the black symbiote suit.

Someone is starved for attention. It's referenced in this article, but those rules come directly from Sony's contract with Marvel (leaked due to their email hack). They're explicitly forbidden from depicting Peter as anything other than a straight white man from NYC. I find it hard to believe Andrew is unaware of that. He likely got hired partially because of that as Donald Glover basically begged for the role. In turn, that also likely resulted in the creation of Miles Morales. Stan Lee himself had spoken against changing the ethnicity or orientation of established characters, instead encouraging people to create new ones with those traits. I don't disagree with him. I think it's disrespectful to bend someone else's creation into something it originally wasn't. They could make Miles a member of the LGBT community, but I doubt they'd be brave enough. A large part of that character's online fandom don't seem like the kind who'd embrace that. There's been no push to promote the other characters who've been Spider-Man. Sony's made "Literally who?" Spider-Man movies and no one's cared, so I doubt LGBT Ben Reilly or something would be different.

The god fearing Society which is the majority will never support it no matter who supports it. You just don’t want to except that gay is an abomination and most people will not watch, buy, or support it. Last thing most people don’t want to see is the same sex kissing and rubbing all over each other. Whenever it comes on my TV, I quickly change the channel even if it’s a commercial. Did you know that their is ten levels in hell, the worse one for the most harsh suffering is at the bottom of the pit for the Homo’s where they all belong. To bad they all are not there right now. I agree with all the above comments!!! It is bad enough changing the original character but it is made worse with this stupid woke stuff!! It is the Cinema's that lose money because the majority of the society won't go to these nonsensible movies. Look what happened in the live Snow White!! Box office bomb!!
